The Chequered Flame, Araotes lapithis uruwela (Fruhstorfer)

This tiny butterfly of the dark understorey is unmistakable - the orange-brown costal patch with dark edges gives it a distinctive leopard-like motive. This is a moderately rare butterfly and seems to be seasonal,  appearing suddenly in certain localities at specific time only. It likes to settle on leaves above eye level, making it a difficult subject to photograph.
