The Elegant Emperor, Eulaceura osteria kumana (Fruhstorfer)

This is essentially an insect of the dark understorey and is secretive, hiding under leaves or standing head down on branches for camouflage. This is not a very common butterfly and is usually restricted to the forest but can sometimes be found in old fruit orchards around villages.

  1. Hi Liew,

good photos! In Singapore this species is common and at times, abundant. it shares the same host plant as the grey sailor and yes, it likes to hide under leaves. shy indeed.
