The Great Orange Tip, Hebomoia glaucippe aturia (Fruhstorfer)

In recent years, this butterfly is less readily seen in the forest, especially on moist spots and flowering bushes where it inhabits. This is the largest pierid butterfly in Malaysia. The uppersides are pure chalky white and the tip of its forewings are marked with a large orange triangle outlined with black. The undersides are heavily cryptic, transforming the large white butterfly into total incognito once it settled on a moist spot (see photos below).

The host plant, Crateva religiosa.

Above pictures of 3rd instar caterpillars. 13 July 2019

4th instar - the lateral false eyes are well developped at this stage.

When alarmed, the caterpillar raises its head to imitate the Green Vine Snake.
