The Jacintha Eggfly, Hypolimnas bolina jacintha (Drury)

This is a sub-species of the Great Eggfly, Hypolimnas bolina bolina and are found in the same habitats of the later. The males are quite similar but the females are strikingly different: the uppersides are almost dark brown with a splash of iridiscent blue on the uppersides of the forewings and has a more pronounced submarginal band on the hindwings.

The Great Eggfly, Hypolimnas bolina bolina (L.)

This was once a very common butterfly in gardens, villages and roadsides. When I was much younger in the late 70s and early 80s, the female form nerina was perhaps the commonest form seen. These days, they are much harder to be seen, the females especially so. Generally commoner in disturbed environment.
